A Peak District holiday that won't cost the Earth
Our Principles
Self catering holiday accommodation in the Peak District
As well as improving our own environmental footprint we wish to help others do the same. From conception to completion we have followed the principles of:
- Retaining the traditional characteristics of an early 18th Century Barn
- Innovative environmental building and design principles
- Use of renewable materials and energy sources
- Minimising waste by 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle'
- Supporting the local economy
- Promoting conservation of the countryside
- Ethical business practices
Construction
To reduce the impact on the environment the timber has come from sustainable renewable resources or is reclaimed. Welsh slate has been used throughout the ground floor. The original grit stone roof has been re-laid and parts of the original beams reused in other parts of the barn. The building is insulated using British sheep's wool and decorated using eco-friendly paints and wood finishes.
Energy and Waste
A carbon neutral wood pellet boiler heats the barn and hot water; our upstairs radiators are all thermostatically controlled. Power comes via a green energy tariff. All of the appliances have been selected for their energy efficiency. There are low energy light fittings so that the building is highly energy efficient. All recyclable materials can be sorted and collected. In addition there is a wormery for all biodegradable waste. Our water comes direct from our borehole and water is collected via butts for the garden. Our septic tank is treated with respect and only biodegradable detergents and chemical free toiletries are used. The ensuites have showers only, to reduce water use
Interior
We have combined old and new, to create a stylish and comfortable contemporary country style. The furniture is sourced either second hand or from companies with sound environmental credentials. All towels and bed linen are organic or fair-trade. Bedroom carpets are from Herdwick fleeces. The barn also provides the perfect setting to display local artists work.
Taking Responsibility
We encourage all of our visitors to 'buy local' during their stay at Top Eccles. We can supply a basic welcome box of local goods on arrival. Milk can be delivered on a daily basis in glass bottles which can be recycled. Eggs can also be provided from our own hens and honey from our bees. Guests are encouraged to use vegetables and fruit from the garden. Think about packaging, it is best to avoid over-packaged goods in the first place.
